Spain Goya's Gala 25 years Small Things

This Sunday night was held, this time at the Teatro Real de Madrid, Gala Goya Awards 2011, held also its 25 anniversary since its first edition was held in 1987.

came surrounded by morbid curiosity, because the (still) current President of the Academy, Álex de la Iglesia, had already announced his resignation after the Gala, and serious differences with the Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde regarding the treatment of the subject Internet and Film. The morbidity was served with the picture of both the small arm at the entrance of the Teatro Real.

As pure spectacle, the Gala was dignified Buenafuente was as expected and, as usual, lasted about 45 minutes longer than planned, ending at one-quarter of the morning.

From the cinematic point of view, the big winner was Pa Negre, Agusti Villaronga, which received up to 9 Goya Awards, including the most important Best Picture and Best Director. For a film shot in Catalan, and a commercial release, so far, quite limited, no longer a pleasant surprise.

Gone are Rain also of Bollain (three Goya) and Buried Rodrigo Cortes, also with three Goya Awards. The big loser of the night was the film's own Álex de la Iglesia, Trumpet Balada Triste, which only garnered two technical Goyas (makeup and special effects). Perhaps the Academy punished by Alex frightened (I think most worthy and justified.)

Apart from this, a technical award Lope and the ubiquitous and Best Actor for Javier Bardem (for Biutiful Gonzalez Inarritu).

If we leave aside short films, documentaries and animated films, including nominations had little else. A whole year of English cinema with only 4-5 remarkable films. A poor harvest for a bad year (another) for English cinema.

also awarded the Goya of Honor for lifetime achievement to director Mario Camus Cantabria. His work includes the memorable The Birds of Baden-Baden (1975), or the unforgettable The Hive (1982) and Los Santos Inocentes (1984), poured to the screen where nothing less than Cela and Delibes. And there was an emotional memory of Luis García Berlanga, who died in the last year.

To me, the most interesting part of the Gala was the (short) speech by the President of the Academy (you can view the entire here, I recommend it, worth it). In just over 6 minutes, made clear its position that (implicitly) will resign from his post. He defended that the Internet is the future (as some believe), but the Internet is the Present . And the Internet will be the salvation of English cinema. Without saying so in letters, defended the need to generate new business model for the sector (such as myself recently postulated ). This is not to defend piracy, but no attack can mean an indiscriminate attack against the Internet and Internet users (since it is a means used by hundreds of millions of people). Neither can be a stubborn defense of the theaters as only way to enjoy the movies (as Javier Mariscal argued in his brief intervention).

Álex de la Iglesia, in inches minutes, said truths as fists, that should give pause to the industry (and the Minister herself, of course) about what their role and mission. Without an audience, this makes no sense . I thought his speech an exercise in humility for which the American political scene does so dramatically. We'll see how things progress in the near future.

The English film industry should come out of this reverie in which takes too long prostrate. You can not survive in a spiral constriction of projects funded that do not interest the public. It is clear that competition with the powerful American movie industry is tough. But you can not survive on protectionism, share and mangers of the state (well, the Government). Winning in this competition can only be achieved on the basis of projects of interest to the public by any means. Attract it to theaters or home screen. Again, to quote Alex, no audience, this makes no sense .
Belén Rueda, a woman reborn,
all elegance and distinction.

And finally, as usual, the ceremony was a perfect exercise of inbreeding of the profession. Although there were voices that spoke to 30,000 people make films in this country (Álex de la Iglesia), and referred to cinematic talent in this room, but there is more out . If the Gala ends up being a kind of catharsis for the sector, welcome it.

remains for me to find out who pays for the celebration. I suspect that the relay TVE exclusive means that at least part of pay among all our taxes.
